How to catch fish

The catch is four beats: bait the hook, charge a cast, click when the strike marker enters the green target, then hold and release left click so the tension bar stays green.

A closer strike makes the fight easier. Reeling is not “hold until it is in.” If the bar climbs too fast, let go. If it falls, hold again. The goal is the green band.

Why the fish leaves

Lines break when tension stays high, when the fish is too heavy for the line, or when the reel is forced. Deeper water and larger fish fail more often. There is no published formula and no “X seconds and it always breaks” number, so this page does not invent one.

Bait is not one best choice

The official FAQ says there is no single best bait. Bluegill and red horse sucker take worm or frog in the shallows. Large and legendary fish want bait value 60 or higher. Sleeping Troll Ragdoll is the top listed score at 86, apart from heart bait at 99, which is a special item and is not in the public bait encyclopedia.

Questions

Should I wait 2–5 seconds?

Not as a rule. That delay describes an older tension tutorial. Use the bar.

Where is the species-to-bait map?

The official bait API lists it. The bait page on this site samples the highest and lowest scores.
